Device to Cloud

Device to Cloud

Device to Cloud (D2C) covers everything a device sends up to /IOTCONNECT™ — telemetry readings, identity, and status. These pages explain the message formats and the identity exchange a device uses to connect and report data.

What is Device to Cloud?

Device to Cloud (D2C) is the direction of data flowing from your device up to the /IOTCONNECT™ platform. Every reading a sensor sends — temperature, status, GPS, and so on — travels as a D2C message. Before a device can send data, it first identifies itself and syncs with the platform. The pages below explain both the message formats and that identity exchange.

How Device-to-Cloud Communication Works

A device collects information from its sensors or connected equipment and sends it to /IOTCONNECT™ using the supported device communication protocol and message format. /IOTCONNECT™ processes the incoming data and makes it
available for use across the platform.

A typical D2C workflow includes the following steps:

Connect the device: The device establishes communication with /IOTCONNECT™ using its configured identity and authentication method.

Prepare the message: The device organizes its telemetry, status information, or other data according to the supported message format.

Send data to the platform: The device publishes its message to /IOTCONNECT™.

Process and use the data: /IOTCONNECT™ processes the received information for monitoring, visualization, rules, events, and other supported platform capabilities.

What Can a Device Send?

Telemetry and JSON Data

Devices can send structured JSON messages containing sensor readings, device attributes, timestamps, and other application-specific values.Telemetry can represent measurements such as temperature, humidity, pressure, energy consumption, GPS coordinates, and equipment status.

Image and File Upload

Devices can upload images, inspection photographs, documents, logs, and other supported files. This allows applications to associate visual evidence and additional information with device operations, beyond standard telemetry readings.

Video Stream

Applications that require continuous or real-time visual information can use video streaming capabilities supported by IoTConnect™. This is useful for remote monitoring, camera-based applications, and visual inspection scenarios.

Explore the Video Stream documentation for more information.

Device Message Formats

/IOTCONNECT™ supports different device message formats to accommodate existing implementations and new device integrations. Choose the format appropriate for your device and SDK implementation.

  • Device Message 2.1: The recommended format for new device integrations using the 2.1 messaging specification.
  • Device Message 1.0: The earlier format for devices that continue to use the 1.0 messaging specification.

Refer to the relevant message specification for payload structures, required fields, supported message types, and acknowledgement formats.

ⓘ NOTE

D2C is data going up (device → cloud). The reverse direction — commands and updates sent down to the device — is covered under Cloud to Device.
